Casa dos Arandis

Immersed in nature and a 2½ hour drive north of Ilhéus, Casa dos Arandis is a gem of a beachfront hotel with just 7 lovely rooms on the Maraú Peninsula in Bahia. Beautiful on the inside as well as the outside – every detail here has been conceived with great care and attention by the resident owners and guests are looked after wonderfully by them and their hospitable local staff. Delicious regional dishes are made with organic ingredients, incredible fresh fruit juices served with a smile. Moving through the beautiful lush gardens you emerge onto a seemingly endless, deserted surf beach where you can walk for miles undisturbed, bask in the tropical sun, swim in natural low tide coral pools or watch artisanal fisherman at work. If that's not enough, on the doorstep shimmers the Bay of Camamu, Brazil’s third largest: a natural paradise with 400 sq miles of beaches, mangrove, islands, waterfalls and reefs to explore with boatman Eliseu.

Senderos Soul

Casa dos Arandis - Made with Love. A place whose sounds, tastes and memories truly linger - que saudade. Bahian sea breeze rustling through palm leaves, and waves pounding a deserted beach; a thousand stars in the dark dark night sky; walking for miles on tropical beaches without a soul to see - except a local fisherman squinting into the sun to spot shoals of fish on the horizon; our kids excitedly snorkelling in clear natural corral pools - that appear magically at low tide - full of brightly coloured fish; and their breakfast smiles so wide with the daily treat of freshly made tropical fruit juices, coconut milk and homemade cake. Hard to leave, easy to return… this place…truly made with love. Cacau and Nanana, have with great care and attention, gently crafted something special.

- Simon, Senderos

Sustainability

  • From 2022, 300 square metres of photovoltaic panels (95 panels) generate enough solar energy for all guests’ needs at the hotel and make Casa dos Arandis (CdA) zero carbon emissions, also accumulating credit for future compensation.
  • CdA has its own organic garden and has recently increased the production of organic fruit and vegetables. CdA is also a member, co-producer, consumer and supporter of a local organic project “Rede de Agroecologia Povos da Mata”.
  • For almost 10 years the hotel has been providing filtered water (reverse osmosis filtration system) in glass bottles and also has a water treatment system to improve the PH and alkalinity of the water at the hotel. This has significantly reduced the use of plastic bottles by guests & employees.
  • The hotel also has partnerships with a number local, socio-environmental and volunteering projects.

Need to know:

  • Wonderfully small, hospitable, intimate and Bahian
  • Big on sustainability, slow travel
  • Local people, big smiles / little English (though the owners will help with that – Cacau, Nanana, Joca)
  • Incredible Bahian breakfasts, after the first morning extravaganza you choose your favourites
  • For lunch and dinner let’s see what's fresh / local / just caught – no huge complicated menu
  • As of April 2023 no direct flights from Rio, most airlines hub through Sao Paulo
  • The 25 km of dirt road when coming from Ilhéus can be a pain for locals, but does help separate & preserve Maraú from the outside world!
  • We recommend guests travel via Ilhéus, as access from Salvador is either by car (ca. 8 hours) or by a very restricted air service in certain months only to the small town of Barra Grande in the north of the Peninsula, 55 minutes by car from Casa dos Arandis.

Perfect for:

Nature lovers, surfers, honeymooners and families alike that love small, intimate & off the beaten track
