Senderos Soul
Each day spent traversing across the Puna you are presented with whole new landscapes and worlds – towering bright white sand dunes, huge pink and orange mountains, dark black conical volcanoes and glistening salt flats as far as the eye can see. You rarely see other vehicles on these routes and only come across other people in the small communities you stop at. This isolation and wilderness, while bringing an immense sense of calm and joy also makes returning to the warmth and friendliness of Hostería El Peñón that bit more special. After long days traveling it is a welcome return to the ’real world’ especially when you immerge washed and refreshed from the day and greeted with a delicious three course meal and a good bottle of Argentinean wine to aid a restful nights’ sleep.

Sustainability
Sustainability at Hostería El Peñón takes the form of working closely with the local community. Socompa who operate the hotel are committed to creating a safe, friendly and supportive environment for all their staff and actively look for people in the local village to join their team. They are very conscious of the livelihoods many villagers may already have – for example small holdings and sheep to look after – and seek to create opportunities which supplement or increase their income through tourism. Mining is big industry in the Puna region and has naturally led to an increase in opportunities for hospitality in the villages. Socompa endeavour to offer an alternative to this through community and sustainable tourism.
Need to know:
- There is very little phone signal in this region and WiFi at the hotel is limited to the communal areas only and can be very intermittent.
- The hotel has a phone should guests need to use it.
- As the supply deliveries come from the larger cities, 5 or 6 hours away, there may be occasional shortages
- The hot water and electricity are run from a generator, but not one that the guests can hear from inside.
- While the Hostería is happy to cater for any dietary requirement, the meals are on a fixed menu basis.
