Hotel Boutique La Casona

La Casona is a small boutique hotel in the beautiful El Rosario Valley, close to the coast and easily accessed just over an hour from Santiago airport. Set within the internationally well-respected Matetic organic and biodynamic vineyard the hotel has ten lovely rooms around a traditional Chilean country house and gardens dating from the early 1900s. Fully restored and elegantly decorated, it offers an intimate experience with exceptional personalised service.

During their stay, guests relax by the lovely pool or explore by car, on bike, foot and horseback – within and beyond the beautiful Rosario Valley, an area in all totalling 16,000 protected hectares featuring sclerophyllous forest. Learn about the area’s flora and fauna as well as organic and biodynamic agriculture, take part in guided Matetic wine tastings and enjoy outstanding Chilean cuisine at Restaurant Equilibrio.

On this my return visit i lingered a little longer and delighted with what i found…beyond the lovely surface - the beautiful rooms, gardens alive with colour, the picture postcard pool and delicious consciously-sourced food - here again is that rare and precious thing, coexistence of nature and human activity, a place that is demonstrably deeply loved, cared for and valued by the owning family. Together we explore many of the nearly 40,000 acres, across valleys and through tracts of preserved sclerophyllous forest with iconic Jubaea chilensis (Chilean wine palms) and towering cacti. We talked and meandered and explored all the way down to the dunes at the pacific coast, whose cold waters provide the ideal climate for those very fine red and white wines - soil, sun, cool nights and biodynamic practices combining to spectacular and delicious effect.

Sustainability

  • Turismo Matetic places sustainability at the core of its operations, committing to environmental stewardship by integrating organic and biodynamic agricultural practices throughout its vineyards and tourism offerings. This includes promoting soil health, biodiversity, and chemical-free cultivation, alongside responsible resource management such as recycling, water conservation measures, and energy-efficient practices. Their approach strives to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the natural balance of the Rosario Valley ecosystem and educating visitors about the importance of these practices within the wine and tourism experience.
  • Beyond environmental responsibility, Matetic’s sustainability policy emphasises social and community engagement by supporting local employment, working with nearby towns and suppliers, and fostering partnerships that benefit the region’s people and culture. These efforts reflect a holistic view of sustainability that encompasses ecological preservation, economic viability, and social wellbeing — ensuring that tourism contributes positively to both the land and the communities that surround it.
  • El Equilibrio Restaurant works with caletas (artisan fishing coves/communities) across Chile to source sustainable seafood. Caletas operate  protect species and comply with all closed-season regulations and fishing restrictions. Provenance / produce & meat – The goal for 2026 is for more than 50% of vegetables to come from own organic garden, and the rest from local gardens around the vicinity. The cattle are pasture-raised and 100% of produce is Chilean, 70% of that being locally sourced.
