Pousada Literária

Immersed in the heart of one of South America’s most beautiful historic towns, Pousada Literária’s 28 suites and villas – blending modern and traditional styles – are set around a stunning central garden and pool. From their base guests explore the historic centre, mountains and subtropical forest that form the spectacular backdrop. And awaiting exploration by boat are the islands and beaches of the glimmering Bay of Paraty.

Once a vital thriving port for gold and coffee, the development of a direct route from Minas Gerais to Rio allowed Paraty to slip into obscurity from the late 18th century, its buildings preserved, stranded in time. Only in the 1970s, with the construction of the Rio-Santos highway, did the town begin to return.

Paraty is a 5 hour drive from Sao Paulo, 4 hours from Rio, or a short private flight. The historic centre of the city, as well as four areas of the Atlantic Forest, joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 under the title “Paraty and Ilha Grande”.

Senderos Soul

After years of travelling in the continent I ‘discovered’ Brazil’s Costa Verde and it astounded me, there is nowhere quite like it. Close to two of South America’s great metropolises yet still pristine and feeling wild – mountains and tropical forest dropping down to secret beaches, hidden coves and warm, protected azure seas.

- Simon, Senderos

Stories:

Senderos stories celebrate the positive impact that sustainable and regenerative tourism can bring to destinations, communities and the environment.

  • Click here to explore the fascinating interview with Pedro Treacher, director of the OCanto group (see below), a collection of hotels including Pousada Literária.

“Our mission is to safeguard biomes in Brazil through ecotourism. Raising awareness about these regions in the face of climate change and expanding industrial agriculture.”

Sustainability

Pousada Literária emphasizes its commitment to the development of practices and initiatives that contribute to regenerative tourism in Paraty. This guarantees a balanced, sustainable and integrated development of the region, ensuring the preservation of the environment and strengthening the local culture and community.

The concept of Regenerative Tourism followed by Literária is based on the definition published by Futuri (Alliance for Regenerative Tourism), which states that: REGENERATIVE TOURISM presupposes, besides the implementation of good practices that improve the territory, the participation of the whole tourism chain in the integrated planning process:

To increase the positive impact of tourism;

  • Provide reconnection, interaction with the environment and ecosystems, and stimulate observation and awareness
  • Foster a sense of identity and respect for the region
  • Promote greater socio-economic inclusion and well-being of communities and visitors
  • Promote restoration of the landscape, ecosystems, watersheds (e.g., springs) and biodiversity
  • Provide transformative experiences in terms of visitor interaction with local community and culture and hands-on learning
  • Provide moments of self-awareness
