Estancia Cerro Guido

Dating originally from 1906, Estancia Cerro Guido is a vast, historic ranch turned boutique wildlife lodge and ambitious conservation project – completely renovated and reimagined in 2022 – on the eastern flank of Torres del Paine, deep in Chilean Patagonia. Set in 107,000 hectares of rolling, biodiverse steppe, the hotel looks directly onto the Paine Massif and is only a 40-minute drive from Laguna Amarga entrance to the national park – offering both seclusion and privacy as well as access to one of Patagonia’s most iconic landscapes. Guests stay in 21 comfortable bedrooms within lovingly restored ranch houses and spend their days riding with gauchos, exploring on foot, vehicle or bike the vaste landscapes and learning how Chile’s largest estancia is pioneering nature-positive ranching. All this while enjoying first-class service and hospitality, showcasing valuing and preserving Patagonia’s unique culture.

The wildlife here is as extraordinary as the views – from guanacos, puma, rheas, condors and falcons – and the goal as embodied in the Cerro Guido Foundation (set up in 2019) is nothing less than to be a beacon for conservation and co-existence across Patagonia.

Estancia Cerro Guido inspires superlatives. The scale…a quarter of a million acres to explore. That’s the size of Greater London yet otherwise the comparison seems wholly unfair. Wide open spaces, soaring epic snow-capped peaks, the stuff of Tolkien. Herds of guanacos in the valleys, rheas on the ridges and bright eyed foxes; condors soar overhead. Extraordinary people call Cerro Guido and Patagonia their home. Such as Pia the Director of the Cerro Guido Foundation, who along with her dedicated team clock up 1000’s of hours in the field; mate-wielding Victor, gaucho extraordinaire and head of the stables; Claudio the chef who conjures up creative and mouth watering culinary interpretations of culture, tradition and lifestyle of this place. To name just a few. On day 2 I take lessons on Coexistence during the Conservation Safari with Fundacion Cerro Guido. After hours exploring the reserve since dawn, all myriad life in this harsh but wildlife rich sub-Antarctic landscape, without tracking or high expectations, we are about to head home when light streams through dark low clouds at the Condorera revealing nature’s spontaneous generosity (and proving Pia’s persistence pays off). Meeting a wild puma at 25 metres - the extraordinarily beautiful Antú - is unexpected and profound. Her eyes! Thank you queridos Pia, Sebastian, Mariana and Maria for the gift of these hours together in wild, windswept Patagonian steppes… and for the lasting memory of those piercing enigmatic eyes.

Sustainability

  • Estancia Cerro Guido pioneers regenerative and wildlife-friendly tourism in Patagonia, and aims to be a model for the coexistence of wildlife and human activity in Patagonia.
  • It became the first hotel in Chile certified under the global Wildlife Friendly Tourism standard by implementing tourism practices that actively protect local wildlife (especially pumas, guanacos and condors), maintain respectful wildlife viewing protocols and support ecosystem health.
  • The estancia directly reinvests a percentage of guest stays into the highly respected Cerro Guido Conservation Foundation to fund ongoing conservation, scientific research, education and community-led environmental programmes.
  • On the ground, sustainable practices include non-lethal coexistence strategies (like trained livestock guardian dogs and deterrents), wildlife monitoring with camera traps and GPS data, and education and engagement with local communities to build shared stewardship of the landscape.
  • Additionally, the property’s tourism model prioritises low-impact experiences, preserves traditional ranching culture, and supports local employment and training, ensuring economic and environmental benefits are balanced and long-term.

The estancia is a member of The Long Run since 2025. See link for more info and Cerro Guido’s own conservation page on its website.

Weather

Patagonia is famous for 4 seasons in one day and, even in summer, southerly storms bringing wind, rain, snow and fast- dropping temperatures. Dress accordingly, layering.

Spring: October and November – temperatures begin to rise though nights are still chilly, and animals become more active, allowing you to see birds and other wildlife. Still relatively few visitors. Average daytime temperature: 14-18°C.

Summer: December to February – long, warmer days, the landscape becomes lush and green, the rivers flow strongly (as can the wind!) and wildlife is at its peak. Average temperature: 18-20°C. The Park and trails become busy with visitors.

Autumn: March and April – winds are dropping and dreamlike landscapes painted in warm shades of yellow, orange and red. Shorter days (12 hours), average daytime temperature: 13°C, can be close to freezing at night

Winter: Shorter days, empty trails, the forests turn white, fantastic wildlife enad lanscape photography. Temperatures drop significantly. Average temperature: daytime 5-8°C, freezing at night, winds at their lowest.
