Amongst flower-strewn meadows below temperate rainforest shrouded mountains I arrive at Futangue Hotel and Spa. I’ve long heard of this hidden, special place on Lago Ranco - only 2 hours north of where I once paused long travels & worked for a summer season - so I am thrilled to finally visit. Here is a beautiful small hotel whose purpose and profits are to fund the conservation of 34,000 acres of Valdivian forests, home to rare and wonderful species of flora and fauna. Amongst an emerald green wonderland for the lucky few, I spend my days Darwin's Frog finding, e-biking past giant nalca leaves, towering lenga and coigue trees to volcanic lava fields, kayaking across hidden lakes and hiking through ancient forest to gob-smacking views of the volcanic Andean range, including far to the south the shimmering peak of Osorno that I once climbed after that summer season. I'm falling head over in heals for the Chilean Lakes all over again.

Sustainability
Futangue is a truly mission led property. The entire founding purpose of Futangue Hotel & Spa is to provide access to and fund 34000 acres of privately protected Valdivian temperate rainforest through its profits. That forest is incalculably rich in flora and fauna and contains
• Over 250 native plant species, 58 of them endemic
• Trails to volcanic lava fields and viewpoints of Lake Ranco and northern Patagonia volcanoes
• Presence of Darwin’s frog colonies
• More than 70% of South America’s temperate forest flora found in the park
Futangue aims to preserve the natural heritage of Northern Patagonia, is committed to protecting the biodiversity of the native forest and to promoting environmental education in the local community – Tourism hand in hand with education, scientific research, & reintroduction of native species.
“We are aiming to create an enduring legacy for the region and to ensure that its fragile ecosystem and natural beauty not only survive but flourish and prosper. The mission of the conservation project is to maintain the ecological integrity of the reserve, reforest with native species and support the reintroduction of wildlife. Visitors help preserve this invaluable natural heritage and project it to future generations through the hotel and park.”
Need to know:
- Futangue Park has over 70 miles of trails to choose from. They are separated into 2 distinct areas that are not walkable from the hotel, and require a short transfer. If guests are self-driving and on a half-board basis, we recommend hiring a 4×4 as the access to the Pitreno side requires this unless joining guided excursions. Transfers from the hotel are also available.
- The beautiful hotel buildings are low-lying and all on one level, carefully designed to blend into the surroundings. The area around the hotel is called the ‘prairies’ where cows graze and hay is harvested. Beyond this, the area is surrounded by snow-capped Andean mountains.
- There is a choice of different packages guests can book onto at Futangue Hotel and Spa – with many people staying on a bed and breakfast, half or full board basis – especially if they are a bit more independent. The All-Inclusive package is an excellent choice for those who would like to have all excursions, transfers, meals and drinks costs taken care of.
- The restaurant serves farm-t0-table cuisine with all food locally sourced. They host a barbeque night at least once a week in high season and many of their vegetables come from a large greenhouse in the grounds, which can be visited on request.
- A fly fishing paradise “A PRISTINE jewel set in the middle of a native forest-covered amphitheater, hiding a reservoir for wild trout, close to perfection.” These are the words of Chile’s angling pioneer, Adrián Dufflocq, describing the scenery where guests can fly fish in Futangue Nature Park.
Perfect for:
Couple and families looking for immersion in the nature of the Chilean Lake District with hiking and biking trails for all abilities. Guests can choose to take independent days out or guided experiences. Delicious food and excellent spa facilities for those extra comforts.
