Tierra Chiloé

**As of the 1st of October 2024, Tierra Chiloé is under the management of the Purcell family, the original founders of the Tierra Hotels group and the owners of Ski Portillo, with decades of experience in hospitality. While it will continue under the brand until April 25 it is no longer owned by the Tierra Group. Please contact us if you require more information.

Though stunning in design, with rustic-luxe interiors and a gorgeous spa, this hotel has sustainability running through its DNA. The eye-catching architecture was inspired by the ‘palafitos’ (stilted houses) of the island, and the geometric, low-rise structure was brilliantly designed to harness natural energy resources. On a remote archipelago that’s deeply rooted in the past, this commitment to being low impact on the landscape and local community is commendable. Indeed, it works in harmony with them; many of the beautiful textiles around the hotel are made by their neighbours, and the restaurant dishes up local fishermens’ catch and ‘curanto’ (a celebratory meal, cooked on hot rocks). Come here to explore dramatic Patagonian fjords and wetlands, with their wild otters, penguins and rare shorebirds. Wonderful guides will lead the way, and share the timeless traditions and myth-based culture of this breathtaking place.

Senderos Soul

Sipping one of Tierra Chiloe’s signature pisco sours (curated with local herbs and honey), I am mesmerised by the frequent flocks of birds gliding over the bay in front of us. This area boasts a huge array of shorebirds, making it a veritable twitchers paradise, even for an amateur like myself. The panoramic views offered from any corner of the open bar, restaurant and lounge takes the attention outside to nature and all that there is to be discovered, allowing your mind to wander about which experience you will be taking the next day whether it’s on the rich blue waters of the sea, or in the lush green hills which are so characteristic of this area.

Stories:

Senderos stories celebrate the positive impact that sustainable and regenerative tourism can bring to destinations, communities and the environment.

  • Click here to explore the fascinating interview with Annette (see below), the market manager for Tierra Chiloe, part of the Tierra hotels collection.

“Tourism can make or break a destination when it comes to cultural expression. At Tierra Hotels there’s a rich cultural exchange and closeness with the local communities.”

Sustainability

  • Designed and built using innovative construction methods to make the most of natural resources for natural heating and ventilation; light and heat from the sun are absorbed through thermopanel windows and renewable biomass energy heats the hotel.
  • A strong link with the neighbouring community, many of whom work at the hotel. Guests are gifted a pair of slippers hand-knitted by local women, and the hotel supplements the regional organic harvest with produce from their own orchards.
  • Chiloe is world-renowned for its ancient agricultural practises and native plants. Tierra helps maintain these traditions within their 20 hectares of land, planting native herbs, fruit and vegetables to serve in the restaurant.
  • Promotes the sustainable management of Pullao wetlands and their rare shorebirds, helping to preserve the island’s biodiversity.
  • Details on the current redesign using recycled platic materials can be found on this blog.

  • A 3-hour drive and boat transfer from Puerto Montt airport, which receives daily flights from Santiago and other destinations. The remoteness is a huge part of the appeal

  • Wonderful guided excursions by boat, vehicle or on horseback will help guests get under the skin of Chiloe and its people, still deeply rooted in timeless traditions and a mythical culture
  • In addition to the published activities, there are many more available including different kayak and SUP routes in Chiloé, depending on guests’ interests and activity levels, or if they’re return visitors
  • Or walk, hike, or bike independently and at your own pace along a variety of routes
  • The lovely Uma spa has 2 heated pools, sauna, steam room and signature treatments
