Senderos is now B Corp™ Certified!
Senderos is celebrating its 20 year anniversary in style – by revealing “we’re officially B Corp certified!”
At a party held at London’s ICA, Senderos Founder Simon Heyes made the official announcement alongside the Senderos team and partners from across Latin America including Mountain Lodges of Peru, Anakonda Amazon Cruises & Estancia Los Potreros.
Senderos is honoured to be joining a global movement of companies that are reinventing business for the benefit of people and the planet. Simon says,
“2024 marks 20 years in business for Senderos, and what better way to celebrate than by joining the B Corp Community. We are proud of being advocates for collaborative, positive change in the travel industry and hope to inspire others when making the case for the commercial viability of sustainable travel and conservation. To achieve B Corp certification I’ve had to evaluate the whole way we value and run our business, striving to maximise positive impact. This has been a very inspiring process, we are proud but also energised and committed to doing better, to keep learning and always with passion and honesty telling the inspiring sustainability stories of our partners across Latin America.””
Whilst certifying marks the beginning of a journey of continuous improvement, Senderos has long been focused on travel as a force for good. The accreditation and Impact Assessment process has further solidified and clarified many of the purpose based values the Senderos team have always held dear.
Senderos is joining a community of over 2,000 B Corps in the UK and 8,000 worldwide and other travel UK industry B Corps include Pura Aventura, Joro, Swoop Travel, Steppes Travel, Audley Travel, Much Better Adventures, Journeys with Purpose, Intrepid, Explore and more.
We are especially pleased to be joining with Senderos partner B Corps Ibiti Project in Brazil and Las Balsas in Argentina in the supportive and creative international B Corp family.
What is B Corp?
B Corp, or B Corporation, certification recognises companies that meet a high standard of social and environmental performance.
The B stands for Benefit for all. This is a movement to change our economic system so that it positively impacts all stakeholders – workers, communities, customers, and our planet. It focuses on making all businesses, in all industries, a force for good.
Certified B Corporations are leaders in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy. Having B Corp status identifies a company as meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices.
Why did getting B Corp™ certified matter to Senderos?
Through B Corp™ Certification we hope to firstly inspire other tourism based businesses – big and small – to do the same. Secondly, securing B Corp status is just the beginning, the team is already looking at new ways to improve and make an even bigger impact. Senderos realises sustainability is an ever-evolving journey not a destination or goal and that no single company is perfect, or can claim zero impact.
Practical next steps
- We’ll encourage all our partners to be certified by a GSTC recognised standard
- We will continue to support calls for an increase in ring fenced APD and frequent flyer tax – as well as the end of tax free aviation fuel – as explained for example in Responsible Travel’s Aviation Manifesto
- All comms from our website and LIVE presentations continue to bring sustainability to the forefront
- We’ll continue to support and collaborate with non-profits creating meaningful change such as The Long Run
- All Senderos travel is carbon balanced, working with world land trust since 2017, Ecollective and Pinwheel
Rising to the challenge in tourism
Faced with the ever growing challenges of climate change and threats to biodiversity, travel companies within the B Corp family can act as lighthouses, trendsetters, idea generators. Nature based travel which protects landscapes, communities and culture, whilst providing income for people and conservation projects can be a catalyst of change. At Senderos our aim is to help tell the stories of our partners who uplift communities, protect wildlife and preserve ecosystems which are fast disappearing, for example areas such as Brazil’s Cerrado through Pousada Trijuncao, or rainforests areas in Costa Rica with Boena Lodges. The more B Corps in travel who share our vision, the better we can work together to protect people and the planet.
